What seems to be minor details, are in fact one of the most important aspects of CA storage: air-tightness. Everything succeeds or fails with having an air-tight cold storage. Besseling has a range of fittings and assemblies that create a reliable long term passageway for all your CA piping, refrigeration piping, sample tubing and temperature probe wiring.

History of Controlled Atmosphere

There is some evidence to suggest that the ancient Egyptians and Samarians in the second century BC stored portions of their crop in sealed limestone crypts to prolong its storage life.
The first recorded experiments to control fruit ripening by changing the atmospheric conditions were carried out in France by Jacquet Beard in 1821. The results of the experiments won him the Grand Prix de Physique from the French academy of Sciences, but it failed to inspire any commercial application.

Portable ethanol measurement KIT

12/2/2016

Next to the DCA Fruit Observer, Besseling nowadays provides a portable ethanol measurement KIT in order to double-check the DCA values of your valuable produce.
The operation principle of Dynamic Controlled Atmosphere (DCA) is based on varying the percentage of oxygen. By accurately measuring the ethanol production in apples and pears you can determine if the fruit is subjected to hypoxic stress and adjust the DCA storage conditions accordingly. The portable kit ensures quick, easy and reliable measurement of the ethanol concentration even at very low levels (<10-20 ppm). The ethanol concentration indicates that the lowest oxygen level has been reached and corrective action should be taken. This can easily be done by increasing the level of oxygen in order to enhance removal of the alcohol produced inside the fruits i.e. apples and pears

The Fruit Observer of Besseling is reliable according to research done by IRTA at the Fruitcentre in Lleida

Over the past years, IRTA (Institut de Recerca i Tecnología Agroalimentaries) carried out a study on the operation of the Fruit Observer in cooperation with Ilerfred, IRTA and the University of Lleida. The results of the chlorophyll fluorescence sensor are positive. The system is ideal for storing fruits and vegetables under Dynamic Controlled Atmosphere (DCA) conditions and is reliable to prevent damage from lack of oxygen during DCA storage.
